Many British homes built from around 1860 may have had a tiled front path, porch, hallway or kitchen tiled with colourful geometric tiles. From the second half of the nineteenth century, geometric and encaustic tiled floors became increasingly popular as they appeared in an ever-growing number of churches, grand Victorian villas and public buildings. By the end of the century, tiled floors and pathways had become an essential feature in even the most common Victorian houses, from Dover to Aberdeen. These colourful geometric tiles are not only beautiful, but hard-wearing and functional too.
